Window manager woes

I started out tinkering with Sawfish to try to set it up more to my tastes. I want to get rid of the Gnome panel, since the only things I'm using it for are the workspace pager thing and some biff-alike email throbber.

I found a replacement standalone pager which seems to be really cool, but I wanted to set up more workspaces and viewports to get the full effect. However, the version of Sawfish I was running (Debian package ‘sawfish-1.1a-2’) has broken the previously good support for these things. Installing the version from ‘testing’ (1.0.1.20020116-3) was even worse: for some reason it now refuses to give me the middle-click menu, giving only a list of numbers for a reason.

For now I'm switching to Fluxbox, but hopefully only until tomorrow. I know the version of Sawfish at work is OK, and it seems to be a slightly older version than any currently available from Debian. I'll borrow the CDs we got about 6 months ago and see if they have the same version.

Strange, there appears to be a bare-knuckle boxing match going on in the field outside my flat. Wish they wouldn't make so much noise about it.
