Hikaru's Go

I've come across an interesting anime series called Hikaru no Go. (My translation of the title as “Hikaru's Go”, by the way, is just a guess.) It's about a Japanese kid called Shindou Hikaru who gets kind of possessed by the ghost of a guy called Fujiwarano Sai, a tutor of Go to the emperor in the Heian period (n centuries ago).

This ghost considers Go to be a high spiritual pursuit, and uses Hikaru to play games against anyone he can. And of course he's brilliant at it, despite not being familiar with some of the more recent changes in rules.

A picture from the second episode, where Hikaru is made to play Touya senior, and is surprised to find himself playing a stone properly for the first time.

The whole idea sounds a bit weird, but surprisingly it really works. I haven't watched much of this yet, and a week ago I knew nothing about Go, but it's got a lot of kick. There's loads of stuff about the finer points of Go, but fortunately the fansubs I've been watching have helpful notes telling you what the hell a tsuke is, and why everyone's excited about a certain move. Still, it's amazing that something like this is so watchable.

Oh, and it's got a thumping good song too.

Some excellently subtitled fansubs of the series are available through BitTorrent.

Just took the annual web design survey that AListApart do. I don't realy consider myself to be a web designer, but I have been doing a lot of HTML and CSS lately.

Strange, there appears to be a bare-knuckle boxing match going on in the field outside my flat. Wish they wouldn't make so much noise about it.
