I ordered the DVD of the first series of Blake's 7 in May last year, before it was released. They finally got around to releasing it a few weeks ago, and Amazon had not forgotten my order. In fact, they've just told me I'll get £10 refunded because the price has come down.
If you don't know already, Blake's 7 is an old BBC science fiction series, originally shown from 1978–1981. It's about a future when an oppressive Federation rules the galaxy with an iron fist. Roj Blake, an idealistic freedom fighter, wants to bring down the Federation. They send him to a penal colony, but he escapes in an advanced alien spaceship (the Liberator) with a motley band of prisoners and tries to strike back. But this isn't Star Wars. The good guys rarely win in the end.
Blake's 7 is a lot more interesting than most TV sci-fi. The characters are mostly fairly flawed or outright nasty, and they don't finish each episode laughing at a crap joke like in Star Trek classic.
The DVD has 13 episodes, most of which I've never seen. This was before my time, so I've only seen the odd episode on video, but it's good enough that I've been wanting to see more of it for years. I just hope they bring the rest out on DVD. The quality is surprisingly good, considering. Apparently there are some ‘special features’ but I haven't looked at those yet.
There's a plan to bring back a new version of Blake's 7, set some decades after the original ended, with a new crew. The people behind it have a flash-based website which has some hints about what the new series might involve. One of those people is Paul Darrow, who played Kerr Avon (pictured above, doing the “beam me up, Scotty” routine) an untrustworthy hacker and thief. They say he might end up playing a long-imprisoned Avon in the new version, rescued by a new generation of freedom fighters. That sounds cool, can't wait :-)
