On Wednesday I went off to Skipton (basically at random) and took a walk around a footpath to get some more practice with the camera.
I've been shooting in the ‘RAW plus fine JPEG’ mode, but so far I haven't had much use for the RAW images. The one below with the cherry tree is the only one I imported from RAW, because the shadows needed to be brightened up. I'm not sure it really works though in this case. I seemed to get quite a lot of noise out on the stones. I think I'll need to practice quite a lot more with the GIMP importer to get good results. In most cases the camera's JPEG output is probably as good as anything I could do manually from RAW.
Update: I called the picture above Wasp on Holly Leaf but Alan Mathison emailed me to tell me that it must in fact be a type of fly in the picture, because it only has two wings.
I've had a couple of goes at trying to photograph this local cat, but I keep coming across it when it's too dark to get a decent shot without flash. It was posing very nicely for me when I got back on Wednesday night from the film, sitting on the end of a fence in my garden, but it obviously doesn't like the flash.
